 DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION

Since the 1990/1991 school year, the Vandalia Division of Police has been offering the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) core curriculum to all of the Vandalia-Butler City School Systems middle schools, as well as St. Christopher Catholic School. The DARE curriculum is taught at the fifth grade level and kindergarten through fourth grade visitations are offered as time permits. At the present time, the Division of Police has one officer assigned to teaching the DARE program. DARE is a nationally recognized program which allows a specially trained police officer to go into the schools and teach the curriculum. Since DARE was first taught in Vandalia in 1990/1991, more than 4,000 fifth graders have participated in and graduated from the program.
